Glen Waverley Soccer Club History

Glen Waverley Junior Soccer Club was formed in 1980 following the merger of two previous clubs at Mulgrave and Waverley. The club has been in existence ever since, playing at various venues until moving to its current home at Larpent in the mid 90’s.

The club experienced steady growth throughout the intervening years. However the meteoric rise in soccer’s popularity in recent years has been reflected in the growth of the club in the last 10 years. This is highlighted by the following statistics:

Ø In 1997 the club was able to field 9 teams with 123 players, from U7’s up to U14’s. The U14’s generally being the oldest age group fielded by the club.

Ø In season 2007 the club entered 23 teams into various junior competitions and 3 teams into senior competitions. The total playing members including the Goalkick programme exceeded 450 players. This represents a 365% growth in players over the 10 years.

Consistently over the last 10 years or so the club has been able to field teams in all age groups from U8’s up to and including senior youth players in the U18 age group. The club has had teams regularly competing in the Super League. Our first team qualified for the, then new, competition in 1998 and was competitive against the likes of Green Gully, Bulleen, Sunshine St Georgies, and Melbourne Knights etc. Whilst the club encourages players of all abilities, many of its teams have gained honours in recent years – either being crowned champions or runners-up in their respective competitions.

Since 2005, the club has also supported a veteran’s team playing in the South East region Master League. In 2007, the club supported its first Senior and Reserves team, entering both into the newly formed Metropolitan League. This was a major step forward for the club, giving the senior youth players an opportunity to continue playing soccer for the club.

Whilst not necessarily part of its history, the following is important in the long running success of the club. The club prides itself on a number of facets not least being the loyalty of its members. The fact that the club is committed to the players and encourages participation in all levels of competition and is a non-ethnic based club are all major contributors to the clubs success both on and off the field of play. The club also does not suffer from the political strife many other clubs seem to have. A stable and pro-active committee have overseen the club activities continuously since the clubs inception. A sound financial footing has also been established ensuring the best facilities and equipment is available for its players and members at all times.
