The FFV fixture computer must have had a bit of a brain fade on the day the Metro league fixtures were prepared, as we found ourselves at home again to the bottom side Caulfield. Never mind, we needed some respite after the previous weeks capitulation. The sun shone on our green and pleasant land and with the stars and planets in alignment, we felt a good day coming on. And so it proved.
Reserves
Glen Waverley (1) 1 v 1 (0) Caulfield Grammarians
Feeling like a piece of ham and cheese, the Reserves were on a roll. Strengthened as they were with a couple of players dropping down from the seniors, the Reserves continue to show improvement each week. Following the previous weeks first win, they took early control and got off the mark midway through the first half with a terrific strike from Matey. As usual goals were still hard to come by as chance after chance went begging. Once again the visiting keeper lead a charmed life with almost every shot hitting some part of his body. Anyway, the second half saw the Grammarians come more into the match and with their only chance of the game, managed to snatch a hardly deserved equaliser. Highlight of the day had to be the return to action of Alex. He was welcomed back into the side after his long injury lay off and proved to be catalyst for some excellent midfield work. At the end of the game we caught up with an exhausted Alex. “I’m pant, pant, just glad to get back into, pant, gasp, action. I was proud of the pant, gasp, phew, effort from all the lads. Now I’m off for a lie down, before I fall down.” Top effort lads.
Seniors
Glen Waverley (2) 3 v 1 (0) Caulfield Grammarians
After the Hors Doevres of the reserves game, it was onto the main course, with the Senior’s dishing up the action. As with the previous week, early domination was the order of the day and some wonderful midfield work from Steve and Kon had the desired effect. Using the flanks to good effect the visitors defence was stretched to breaking point. Theos gave the team that cutting edge as he calmly helped himself to a first half double strike. The first came from some great work by Petey on the right and the second from Lloyd excellent ball from the left. Being 2-0 up at half time gave them no real comfort. So with serious faces on and concentration etched all over their faces the second half brought more of the same. Theos brought up his and the teams third, and the team looked to be cruising to their third win of the season. However we all knew what can happen after last week, and when Caulfield pulled one back, we started to think here we go again. However, with a full bench, Steve was able to bring on fresh legs to shore up a tiring midfield. The lads dug deep and saw out the game to notch up their third win of the season. At the post match press conference Steve commended the players on their efforts this week. “The lads bounced back well after last week’s disappointment and that’ll do wonders for their confidence. Now I’m off for a lie down, before I fall down too.” Hopefully not with Alex. In the background Kon was heard to say “Why am I sweeping up? I didn’t think I played that bad today.”
It was great to see the lads get some good results, albeit against fairly weak opposition. The reserves now have one more point than the whole of last season and the seniors are well placed in the top half of the table. Good stuff lads, now let’s see if we can keep the momentum going.
