The sun continues to shine on our start to the season, but that was the only bright thing yesterday. Our Middle Eastern opponents obviously had divine intervention as they took all 6 points.
Reserves
Glen Waverley (0) 0 v 1 (0) Reservoir Strikers
After last weeks reverse at East Bentleigh, the “Ressies” thought they had a chance to get their first win. However try as they might they could not get the ball into the onion bag. Ari’s golden touch deserted him for once, and the leading goal scorer was given no opportunity to demonstrate his acrobatic goal celebration. The visiting goalkeeper had one of those days where he got in the way of everything. Even some superb corner kicks and crosses from Robbie were not capitalised upon as chance upon chance went begging. The Reserves dominated for long periods of the game; however they were caught napping just after the break, with the visitors putting away their only meaningful chance of the game. Solid performances from new keeper Nick, Robbie on the right and Matthew up front were not enough to get the lads over the line. Coach Alex commented after the game “We didn’t get the breaks today, but hopefully next week we can turn the corner and get our season rolling. The lads need to be rewarded for their efforts.”
Seniors
Glen Waverley (0) 1 v 5 (3) Reservoir Strikers
Back to earth with a bump was probably the best way of describing yesterday. The Firsts came up against one of the strongest teams in the league and were given a bit of a lesson. Try as they might the lads just couldn’t cope with the speed of movement in midfield and quality of the opposition strikers. If Allah was a soccer player then he surely smiled on Reservoir yesterday. However sometimes a team is only as good as the opposition allows and with most of our players seemingly off their game, it may have been different story if they’d performed. Anyway next time round it’ll be a different story as we’ll know what we’re up against. As for shining lights yesterday, only Lloyd stood out, but Julian gave another solid performance and Matey was as tireless as ever. Congratulations also to Steve though for getting his first goal for the club, although we’re sure he would have preferred it to have been the winner. For the rest a collective non-performance got the result it deserved. Scratching his head Steve was heard to comment “We needed that to get our feet back on the ground. We belong in this league but we still need to work hard.”
