Round 22 as it happened ...
The curtain closed on our second season, and to help us bring the season to
an end we welcomed our friends, those wonderful chaps from Upfield. To
ensure we made them feel very special, we elected to use our first choice
facilities at Glen Waverley North. The weather turned on a show and a large
crowd turned out to see if we could finish the season on a high. Our
visiting friends also showed they could make friends with anyone by even
greeting the referee like a long-lost friend. So with free-love and
friendship threatening to break out everywhere, let's see if this would last
as the teams took to the park.

(By the way it's good to see our website is being viewed by not just our own
players and fans, but by other teams too. For those who get a little upset
by what is said, just remember, we see it from our perspective and sometimes
it can be tongue in cheek but sometimes it's true. If you cheat, we'll point
it out, if you're cocky and full of bull, we'll let you know, if you win or
play the game as it should, we'll applaud. If the truth hurts, tough. So get
over it and just enjoy ... you know who we're talking about.)

Reserves

Glen Waverley (0) 0 v 6 (3) Upfield

For the last game of the season, the Reserves faced the challenging
prospect of playing a team needing at least a point to secure the
championship. They paid us a huge compliment, not just on the quality of the
facilities, but also making sure they fielded their strongest side. So the
pressure was on Upfield to perform, and the Glen Waverley boys, had nothing
to lose.
The friendly referee blew to get the game going - three times in
actual fact. For the first 20 minutes or so there was nothing to choose
between the two sides although we did allow those nice chaps from Upfield a
few chances, just to make them feel welcome. Dan pulled off a great save
early on, but Bill also had a free-kick pushed over the bar by the visiting
keeper.
The local lads, spurred on by the larger than usual crowd grew in
confidence and created enough chances to make Upfield sit up and take
notice. They're not top of the table for nothing and gradually their
midfield took control. But it took a mistake from our backline to gift them
their opening goal. Similar mistakes cost us another 2 before the referee
took pity and blew for halftime. The reserves lost Savva after only 10
minutes, robbing the team of their solid midfield general. Eduardo tried
manfully to stem the tide, but couldn't hold out against the stronger and
more fluid visitors.
The second half saw pretty much more of the same, but Kenneth Trac
showed what an exciting talent he is by his constant running at defenders.
He was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as was Matt Soon whose
spectacular overhead bicycle kick just grazed the top of the cross-bar.
Again the visitor's potent strikers took every opportunity that came their
way, cracking in 3 more in the second half. Two were gifts but the third was
a terrific long range effort from outside the box.
No matter how hard the Green Army tried they couldn't buy a goal. Matt
Depta, Alex Martin, Eduardo, Guillermo and Kenneth all saw chances go wide.
Robbie trying to get his first of the season also had a shot just trickle
past the post.
An unflattering score line, but don't be mislead. The lads played
well against the champion team. Good luck to Upfield and congratulations to
them.
Sir Alex was full of praise for his lads - "We've had a great season
and with a more settled side earlier, we could have been even better. The
young players have stood up against stronger and more experienced players
and come out with enormous credit. Roll on next season." Rounds of applause
and much hand-shaking took place as love, friendship and harmony continued
unabated. Upfield sang something about winning, so we left them there.

Seniors

Glen Waverley (0) 0 v 2 (0) Upfield

And so it came to pass
On the green, green grass of North
A senior's game of note
Was due to issue forth

The teams were ably led
By captains strong and true
Onto the pitch so green
Under a sky of radiant blue

A crowd of young and old
Had gathered here today
To see if the Waverley boys
Could bring three points their way

Standing in their way
All the way from over west
Were the champion team Upfield
Bent on playing their very best

Micky V and Justin Reed
Tackled well and run all day
Nanos huffed and puffed
As did Anouk and Matey

Alex saved well in goal
And Hayden did his best
Also Lloydy, Theos, Julian
Stevey V and all the rest

Their toils were all in vain
As Upfield stole the show
Winning by two goals to nil
They were champions you know

So with season at an end
And we say our last goodbyes
We look forward to next season
When we'll be on the rise

Look out FFV
And all your local teams
Glen Waverley will be champions
We've seen it in our dreams

Thanks to all the players and coaching staff for a fantastic season. A
wonderful bunch of blokes, you've been a credit to yourselves, your team
mates and to the club.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to read what we had to say each
week. Keep logging on from time to time. You never know we might find other
things to prattle on about during the close season, whiling away the time
until season 2009 comes around. It won't be long you know.

Goodnight and good luck.
