The original round 20 games were called off, with GWN under water followed the deluge on the previous Friday. As were most of the games that weekend. So we ended up tagging the game on at the end of the season, since it was one of the most important games in our short history. The reserves also got their fun in the sun.
Venue - Glen Waverley North Reserve Pitch - perfect, second time round Weather - perfect, second time round Canteen - we did our best, bbq and drinks. Crowd - large and boisterous - mixture of bogans and cultured souls
Reserves Result ... Won 8-2 Scorers ... Yure (2), Chris M, Lloyd, Theo, Alex M, Bill G. Kenny
This ended up being the last game of the season for the reserves and boy did they finish on a high. Everyone it seemed wanted to join in the fun of scoring. Even after putting 5 past the hapless visitors by half time and being asked to slow down, the lads still rattled in another three. The young players who made up the bulk of the team made their mark, but it was also good to see Bill G and Theo get on the score sheet again. Especially after being there to do all the hard work for the others.
A terrific season came to an end with boys lying 4th on the ladder. With 2 games not played and against teams they'd beaten previously, there was a fair chance they could have wrapped up runners up spot, and rightfully so.
Player's player of the year votes Lloyd ... 24 points Alex M ... 14 Yure ... 9
Seniors Result ... Lost 1-4 Scorer ... Johnny (2nd half sometime)
So for the final game of the season, the lads needed the three points to stay in 10th spot. However Eltham decided that they'd come to play because 4th spot in the league was SOOOOO important. Anyway, they didn't do us any favours and came to play competitively and ultimately ran our comfortable winners.
On the day, it was just one match too far for our lads. Injuries and rescheduled games took their toll and our team just wasn't up to it. Two goals to the visitors in the first half just about killed the game. Johnny gave us some hope in the second half but Eltham had other ideas and powered home 4-1 winners. That ended our season just as it had began, with a loss. There was plenty of effort nevertheless and Gazz, Johnny, Stevie W and Jules gave their all.
A final position of 11th on the ladder was not a fair reflection of our capabilities, but it doesn't lie.
