Here we are again ladies and gentlemen, for our weekly roundup of the
weekends action. This week's blockbuster saw us up against one of the top
teams in the league, but with home ground advantage, would we be able to
dent their title aspirations? Read on to find out, but first, what could the
reserves do in their quest to cement a top four spot?
Round 18 v Meadow Park
Venue ... Larpent Dome
Weather ... Sunny, so we left the roof open.
Reserves
Result ... 0-3
Halftime ... 0-2
Scorers ... only them this week, none of ours.
We think the result pretty much sums up the game this week - we lost.
Changes in the line-up were minimal but we saw the return of Theo to the
starting line-up and the bench was filled with Dan, "Soonami" and Eddie, all
returning from injury, marriage and other stuff.
The visitors looked well-organised and played accordingly. Their lowly
league position didn't match their performance as they took control pretty
much from the start. Under pressure from the first whistle, there was little
Alistair could do against the first goal. A loose ball in the box ricocheted
out to the right and the unmarked "Parker" was left plenty of time to slot
the ball in at the far post.
This was the wake-up call the Waverley boys needed and there was a spark of
life in the midfield. Some slick movement down both flanks ended up with
some half chances to Yureshan and Guillermo. Petey, playing his 200th game
for the club, was in the thick of the action down the right hand side. Dean
and Lloydy were trying to get some sort of partnership happening in the
middle and Prashan, as always, was full of running down the left.
There was little they could do however with the visitors second goal.
Conceding a corner, midway through the half, the ball was floated over and
allowed to drop in the six yard box without challenge. This allowed a Meadow
Park player to hit an easy half-volley into an unguarded net.
Meadow Park were a robust and vocal side and some of the challenges bordered
on indecent. However the home team didn't allow themselves to be dragged
into anything unsavoury and kept their discipline throughout. It wasn't a
particularly inspiring first half performance and hopefully some changes at
the break and a few choice words would help improve things.
As the game progressed though, he lads did try to pick up the game and some
fluid midfield passing still couldn't get the end result. A number of close
calls went begging so the bench was called upon to see if they make
something happen. Eduardo huffed and puffed and Dan tried to take command in
front of the backline, but neither could find that missing spark. Even Matty
Soon couldn't get on the end of anything meaningful. The visiting goalie's
hardest work of the afternoon was making sure his vocal chords were in good
order ie he never shut up.
Looking to push on and try to get a goal, the home side were caught on the
break and Alistair could do little to prevent the third and final goal.
A slightly flattering result? Maybe, but the local lads were never really at
the races today and were probably a little intimidated by their more
aggressive opponents. Never mind, there's always positives to take out of
the game, none more so than Guillermo's efforts and both Sean's in the
backline. Congratulations to Peter on reaching the 200 game milestone. A
great achievement from a loyal servant to the club. Now we look forward to
East Bentleigh next week, where we try to dent their title aspirations.
With the smell of carbon tinged burgers wafting across the ground, we
settled back to enjoy our Seniors take on the men from the North west.
Seniors
Result ... 2-0
Halftime ... 1-0
Scorers ... Metin, Micky V(pen)
Finally, at long last something special happened at Larpent Dome today. Yes,
you've guessed it, Greg has split ends. Spotted by Tony in the changing
rooms before kick-off, this news was reported directly to the medical staff
who quickly took measures to ensure there would be no long lasting damage.
The team rallied behind Greg as they needed him to perform this weekend and
thanked Tony for his eagle-eyed observations. Well done boys, a good team
effort.
In amongst the pre-game preparations, there were also some well-deserved
presentations. Matey and Anouk are another of the club's loyal players, both
having played all their football at Glen Waverley. Anouk has now reached 100
games played and Matey has now sailed past 200 games and were both rewarded
accordingly.
As for the game, the team put on probably their best performance of the
season. We can go into detail, however it should remain as just that, a
brilliant team effort. Outstanding on the day were Matey, Justin and Metin,
but the rest of the lads can hold their heads up. Solid defence including
the keeper, fluid and constructive midfield and a potent front line.
The first goal came as a result of a beautifully flighted free-kick into the
box from Kon on the left hand side. Metin rose to meet the ball in the box
and placed a super header just under the bar. From then on Meadow Park had
precious few chances and were rattled. They lost discipline and generally
lost the midfield battle.
Steve's lads stuck to the plan throughout the match and continued to press
through Steven Harvey and Met. Steve was denied a penalty as the keeper
looked to have taken his legs, but within 15 minutes, Micky V was brought
crashing down 2m inside the box. This time the referee had no choice but to
give the spot kick. Micky stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty to
give the lads a 2 goal cushion.
As the second half progressed the visitors discipline wilted under the
pressure. A couple of their players saw red for dissent, but Micky V was
also sent for an early shower after picking up his second yellow. The game
became fractious as Meadow Park saw their title hopes fading before their
eyes, but they became their own worst enemies as they argued every decision.
Still credit to the Waverley boys as they played out the game as they
started - in charge and on top.
The win was a long time coming but worth the wait. Now the lads have to back
up this performance with another and another and another. Finish the season
on a high. Feet on the ground lads and concentrate on next week. The hard
work hasn't finished, it's only just begun.
Our reporter caught up with Greg after the game, "I'm proud of the boys"
said an obviously delighted Greg, "How they spotted my split ends was quite
remarkable, and I'll look forward to them backing it up next week."
Onto East Bentleigh ... where the hard work continues.
PS ... To reduce tangles and get rid of split ends, brush your hair before
you take a shower. While you're in the shower, try not to bunch up your hair
while you're washing it. Make sure your hair hangs straight down, apply
shampoo near the top of your scalp, and work the lather downward by gently
working your fingers in a zigzag motion down the length of your hair. This
will prevent tangles that encourage breakage when you brush after your
shower.
